Dogs heat up more quickly than humans. Their normal body temperature is slightly higher than that of humans, which means that hotter temperatures can affect them more. That’s why you need to take care while walking your dog on a hot day. Also, don’t forget about pavement because the ground heats up fast in the sun and can be painful on dogs unguarded feet.
Not to mention, dogs have that thick layer of fur. So a day that may not seem overwhelmingly hot to you can be a scorcher for your dog.
Dogs sweat only through their paws pads. The only method of removing excess body heat effectively is by panting and considerable body water is lost via the breath. When out for a walk or any activity, a dog should be able to take a drink.
On hot days Elena’s Happy Paws reserves the right to cut walks short or to spend time in the garden or house with your dog to prevent exhausting. In all cases we will endeavour to walk your dog in the shade and with constant access to water provided it is safe to do so considering the temperature, breed, age and health of your pet. It is crucial that your dog can drink to replenish water lost through breath.
Also, small dogs will become hyperthermic more rapidly than a large dog because their body surface is considerably larger compared to their body volume.
